17: A pretty good day, all things considered
Hello hello hello hello.
Today... was a pretty good day. The new Destiny expansion launched this morning, so of course I left work early (because I got there early this morning, and only like 30 mins, chill) to play it. I had neglected, however, to use my brain and leave my Xbox running so that it could update. When I got back to the apartment at like 5:15, I turned on my xbox and saw that the update was 130GB. That's the size of most of the game. I'm not going to pretend to understand the black magic that is game development, but I really didn't expect it to be that big, so I resigned myself to not getting to play today and started the update. It initially claimed to be complete in roughly 4 hours, or at around 9:30 PM. This, however, was a falsehood! I moved the xbox from the corner of the desk next to the wall closer to the middle, and the speed increased significantly (when you understand how these things work, you can play their games a little bit). I didn't know exactly how long it would end up taking, so I switched the input on the monitor back to my laptop and worked on my portfolio some more, and then watched some youtube videos and fiddled with my server a bit. The download only ended up taking around an hour and a half, which was much less than I expected, so I got on at around 7. I got on and played the first mission alone on one of my characters, and then went back and played it again with my Dad after he got online. We played for a few hours, and I was pleasantly surprised with how it went. There has been much trepidation in the community about this expansion, helped in no small part by how little Bungie told us about it in the leadup to release, but I think it will have been mostly dispelled by how well the story is going so far. I can't comment on it in it's entirety just yet, but the interplay between the new and old characters, and the multi-layered mysteries that they're setting up have gotten me excited about this game, which is much more than I was expecting from this expansion.
