299: Friendly, but not kind
The title today sounds like it's mean, but it actually isn't. It's a phenomenon I've noticed in some people where they do nice things (holding the door for you, for example), but without any air of kindness. They stand at the door expectantly and almost tautly, waiting for you to get there so they can be done with their good deed. These people are also never responsive; I always say thank you, and I frequently get a "no problem" or "you're welcome", but never from someone who's holding the door out of kindness, but without the associated warmth.
To be perfectly clear, this isn't a problem, I actually think the world would be a better place if there was more of that than nothing, and I do appreciate those people doing what they can / what they feel comfortable doing for others. It's the small kindnesses that keep everyone happy and together.
Now thinking about it for a minute, living in a community (like a dorm building) is such a boost to my opinion of humanity. There are unquestionably some dipshits in here, don't get me wrong, but the amount of good human interaction that I get to see and be a part of is bigger here than in maybe any other living situation, and it fills me with joy.
