314: Productive Procrastination
I got out of bed at 2PM today, which was kinda lovely. I didn't have anything that I needed to be immediately working on, so I had the bandwidth to not worry about sleeping in a whole lot.
The title is about the only thing that I actually got done today, which was cleaning my room (and putting a bunch of stuff where it actually goes, not just in a random bin or spot on the shelf.
I had homework that I almost definitely should have been doing, but the soonest stuff is due tomorrow night, and it's just Italian, so I should have plenty of time to get it done tomorrow.
The thing I really should have been working on is the 329 project for this week, which I hadn't touched at all. BUT! I have smart and hard-working friends, and I had a good friend send me her codebase for it, so I have a huge headstart when I do finally work on it (hopefully tomorrow).
The other productive procrastinating that I did today was work on my second screen. I don't know if I've ever talked about it on the blog, but I have a secondary display that I carry around for my laptop built out of the original screen from said laptop (I upgraded to a matte textured one at one point) and a $12 alliexpress usb-c board that actually works great. This secondary display was literally taped together in a cardboard folio for a while, but it had to fail eventually (I use this thing a lot), and yesterday was that day. I knew it was going to happen, but I didn't want to deal with the relatively-complicated design challenge that is building a new housing and enclosure for the screen, so I didn't until I had to (which is today). I have an old top-cover (because the current one has my light-up logo in it), so I put the screen in that, and I had an old bezel (my current one is see-through, og was black), so I have half of the setup I need, just not the whole thing.
I'm not certain what the best pathway for this is, honestly, because I also have the original hinges (they wore out so I upgraded at one point), but those only go 180 degrees, and without putting something heavy on the plate I would mount to hold the screen up (like a normal laptop is set up) that wouldn't work, but I both don't want to carry around something unnecessarily heavy, and the space immediately in front of that secondary display is the space I usually use for my mouse (I put the secondary display to the right of the laptop). It's not a problem I have a solution for yet, but it's the main engineering thing I'll be thinking about for a while.
That's kind of everything for today. I wanted to go on a bike ride, because I totally had the time, but I was under house arrest (on call) until 7:30. Absolutely nothing happened while on-call, but my movement was limited.
I'm at El's now, writing this, and I'm staying the night here (yippee!). I got here ~10-ish, and we've just been hanging out. Her roommates have a PVP fighting game called Rounds that we've been taking turns at, and it's pretty fun, so I played a bit of that with them, but now it is bedtime.
